Grievances and disputes
Every organisation needs to have a mechanism whereby employees can raise concerns. When they are raised, it is important that managers deal with them promptly and thoroughly. A poorly handled grievance can often be more damaging to employee morale than the issue the employee was initially concerned about.
How should I manage a grievance?
It’s important that you have a clear policy that outlines what an employee should do when they have a concern. This should have at least 3 stages to it.
- An informal stage where most concerns can be addressed without the need to get to a formal dispute.
- A formal hearing
- An appeal hearing
At each stage, it should be made clear who the employee will speak to and that there will be no action taken against an employee if they raise a legitimate concern. This is called victimisation.
Where possible, a different person should hear each stage of the formal process to ensure impartiality.
